
NYWA Team Tournament Rules

There are 15 weight classes with 6 alternates for the region team tournaments K-6 team competition and also for state team tournament. They are as follows: 45 – 50 – 55 – 60 – 65 – 70 – 75 – 80 – 84 – 88 – 93 – 102 – 115 – 130 – Hwt. (Maximum 215 lbs.)

There are 9 weight classes with 4 alternates for 7th –8th grade team tournament. They are as follows: 80 – 90 – 100 – 110 – 120 – 130 – 140 – 160 – Hwt. (Maximum 235 lbs.)

Minimum weight for heavyweight class is 115.1 at regions and 116.1 at state because of the one-pound allowance at state. For the 45 lb. weight class, a wrestler can weigh 45 lbs. at regions and 46 lbs. at state with no minimum. There is no one-pound allowance at regions. All wrestlers will receive a one-pound allowance at state - but ONLY at state, NOT at regions. The tenths will remain uncovered at both regions and state.

Regional entry fee per team is $175.00. Entry fee and roster should be mailed to region tournament director at least one week prior to event. Please email roster to NYWA also for program purposes should team advance to state.

Team rosters can change until the end of weigh-ins the day of the team tournament both at regions and at state.

Saturday individual weights are good for Sunday dual team region if on same weekend. The director of the team tournament must verify individual weights.

State entry fee per team is $250.00. Final roster must be emailed to NYWA by the Sunday prior to the state tournament. Entry fee will be collected at the team weigh-in.

Region team tournaments must use certified referees.

Region team tournaments are double elimination.

The top six teams at each region will advance to the state team tournament; the two regions with the most teams at their regional tournament, will advance the top 7 teams. There are no qualifying (region) team tournaments for grades 7-8.

In the event two or three regions have the same number of teams:

The region that did not send a team the year before will send a team.

The region with the most individual wrestlers will send a team.

Wrestlers wrestling in both individual and team at state may weigh in Friday night for both individual and team (K-6 grade). Then on Saturday, that wrestler can weigh in again at a different weight class for team competition. All 7-8 graders will weigh in on Thursday evening whether they are participating in individual competition, team competition or both. If a 6th grader is wrestling on the 7th & 8th grade team, he/she must weigh in again on Friday for the K-6 individual or team weight. The weight for 7th & 8th grade does not qualify for the K-6 events.

Team wrestlers can move up only one weight class as in high school.

Only coaches can present a wrestler to wrestle. It doesn't matter who runs out on the mat at any given time, when the coach tells the table workers who is wrestling, that is the presentation of the wrestler.

All dual team wrestlers must have shoe laces taped or covered as in high school rules.

All dual team wrestlers must wear head gear as in high school rules.

All dual team wrestlers must wear singlets.

For dual team tournaments, region and state, all wrestlers on each team must attend schools that feed into the high school program . If the wrestler attends a private school or is home schooled, then he/she is allowed to wrestle with the team that comes from the school district he/she lives in. If a wrestler lives in one district and is home schooled or attends a private school in that district, but his/her siblings attend school in another district, then the wrestler can wrestle with the team that is in the school district his/her siblings attend.

The coach from each team is responsible to ensure that only wrestlers that are on their roster qualifies under rule 18. If any wrestler on the roster does not qualify, that team will be disqualified that year and the year following the year of infraction. Regions must wrestle to 7th and 8th place in the event a higher placing team can not go to state.

Team plaques will be given to the top four teams at the regional level. The top eight teams at state will receive awards.

Biting – this will be determined by the referee and follows high school rules.

Crying Rule – this will be determined by the referee and follows the same criteria as injury time outs.

Any team may forfeit at regions at any weight but do not have to forfeit that weight at the state tournament. At the state tournament, a team must put a wrestler on the mat for each match or they will forfeit that match at that weight for the remainder of the tournament. This is the same as high school rules.

Teams may forfeit weight classes at regions for one match and not forfeit that weight the next match.

Teams must compete at the regional team tournament that their school district falls under. Check the boundaries map at www.nywa-mn.com.

Sixth graders are allowed to be on the 7th & 8th grade team roster to fill smaller weights; however, no one under the sixth grade can participate on the 7th & 8th grade team. These wrestlers will need to weigh in again on Friday night of the state tournament for the weight they will wrestle at for their age division.

In the event a team is unable to attend the State Team tournament, NYWA reserves the right to replace them with any other team, beginning with the teams that wrestled in the regional tournaments.

Any team qualifying for the State Team tournament but is unable to attend must notify NYWA as soon as possible so NYWA may select another team to replace them. Team or teams not notifying NYWA of their state participation by Wednesday night prior to the state tournament may be replaced by alternate teams selected by NYWA.

Any team invited to fill a vacant spot in the State Team tournament must wrestle in that spot only.

Districts with 200 kids or less will advance all wrestlers to the region tournament.

Any wrestler sending an entry form to the region qualifier and they did not weigh in AND WRESTLE at a district tournament, within that region, will be disqualified from that regional tournament.
